Memorandum for: Honorable Joseph C. O'Mahoney
United States Senate
From:
The President
I asked Bob Kerr to come to see me last night about the
Alaska Statehood Bill and I had quite a conversation with
him. He says if you can find it convenient to announce
hearings on that bill that he is very certain there will be
four more votes for Statehood.
I've asked Oscar Chapman to discuss the matter with you
and then use your best judgment on it.
It seems that Senator Monroney of Oklahoma succeeded
in getting Bob and Carl Hayden committed to the vote
which they cast on recommittal. The probabilities are
that such conciliatory gestures may do some good in our
effort to get these Statehood bills passed. There is no
doubt in my mind but what they ought to be passed.
