MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject: Meeting with the National Association of Syrian and
Lebanese American Federations, October 3, 1951,
12:00 p.m.
Ten American citizens of Arab extraction, members of the Na-
tional Association of Syrian and Lebanese American Federations,
representing the Eastern, Southern and Midwestern Federations,
will call on you on Wednesday, October 3, 1951 at 12:00 p.m. and
formally present a memorandum to you. This organization is a
non-political social group whose motives are entirely patriotic and
it is the largest and best publicized Arab-American organization of
its kind. A list of these representatives is attached at Tab A and an
advance copy of their memorandum under cover of a summary of its
contents prepared in the Department of State is at Tab B.
The memorandum pledges the "consecrated determination to
offer and use all resources at our command to help in promoting the
peaceful objectives of our country in the Near East" and makes sev-
eral recommendations for the improvement of United States relations
with the Arab countries. Brief highlights of the document will be
orally presented by a spokesman for the Federation.
You may wish to make informal remarks along the lines suggested
in the outline attached at Tab C. No official press release of your re-
marks is planned, but no objection is perceived to your permitting
members of the Federation to report their accounts of the interview
to the press if they SO desire.
