My dear Mr. President:
Thanks so much for your very kind letter of November 23,
and I appreciate your generous and liberal comments, and it
will be the greatest pleasure of course for me to do anything
you want me to. The only thing I had in mind was to go back
to engage again in pretty much the same pursuits that I left,
and if I stayed so far away from all my friends for too long
they would begin to forget me.
I will plan to come up to Washington around the middle
of February or the first of March and will look forward to
seeing you then.
I wrote to Howard McGrath a little while back and told him
not to worry too much about the deficit, because I felt sure we
could pay it off around the end of March or the lst of April;
the same way we did the Democratic deficit back in 1942 when
President Roosevelt asked me if I would not work on it for him,
and we cleaned it up entirely, but unfortunately like all Demo-
cratic deficits it didn't stay cleaned up.
The way I suggested to Howard to raise the money, we will
have the Republicans paying for about half of it; they're so
used to that sort of thing now it won't be any great burden to
them.
We are enjoying very much the visit here of your good friends,
Senator and Mrs. Chavez. The Senator is absolutely ideally suited
for these people because they consider him not only a brother under
the skin, but he is completely bilingual. He has only been here
three days, and next to Peron is already the most popular man in
the Argentine. He has been the greatest help to us, and if anyone
can make headway with the Argentines he can. I am sure you will be
interested in talking with him when he gets back.
The President,
The White House.
