I need not tell you how strongly I too deairo to avoid any disruption of indispensable relations among the three nations. I recognize fully the unpleasant dileama in which your Dovernent finds itsolf since, to a degree certainly, wa face the same dilemna ourselves; and you have my assurance that we will do all that we can to assist you in resolving this dilemma. I can under- stand as wall the natural auxiety of the Australian Government to set its house in order and to resuma with us both 168 partnership in all defense natters, including those of defense research. with these things in aind, I agree with you that a full and frank discussion with a person whose qualifica- tions are such as you describe for sir Frodarick shedden should prove to be useful. I ahall, therefore, asit our Secretary of Detense to extend an invitation to sir Frederick to visit Washington en route to London in May and to maite the arrangements that will put him in touch with the appropriate U. officials.
