"The Australian Ambassador presents his compliments to The Honorable The Secy of State and has the honor to re to the formers note of 7 May, 1948 to the Hon 6611 George C Marshall, Secy of State for the US of Amer, and to subsequent correspondence in connection with the reduction in strength of the British Commonwealth occupation force in Japan. It will be recalled that at that time it was desired nig to reduce the British Commonwealth occupation force in view of the manpower position of the Australian SVCS, the com- pletion of the tasks of the demilitarization in the area occupied by the British Commonwealth occupation force and the generally settled conditions in Japan. The Australian 3 a Govt has since noted that there has been a further change in the nature of the occupation as. exemplified by instructions and directives of the Supreme Comd for the Allied Powers including Change Nr 7 to Occupation Instruction Nr 5 issued on 16 Jul, 1949.
