Dear Mr. President:
I had a long conference with the Prime Minister
Saturday and he and Mrs. Menzies spent Sunday evening
with Beryl and me. He is most appreciative of his
reception in Washington and enthusiastic about you.
Repeatedly referring to you, he once said you had been
"the most under-rated man in history" but had come in-
to your own, He especially complimented your fine
personality and great ability and is most grateful
for your courtesies to him.
He brought his Washington photographs to show us
and there is no doubt that the excellent framed one you
gave him will always be one of his most prized possess-
ions.
While it is not unusual for you to hear such com-
pliments, my thought that your probable agreement with
my high opinion of him will cause you to especially
appreciate them prompts me to pass them on.
While doing so I enclose a similarly complimentary
clipping which Beryl and I read with keen interest.
It is a coincidence that the above was dictated
several hours before your keenly appreciated letter of
August 9 arrived.
Yes, the 4th of July party was a good one and we
heartily share your wish that you could have been
present.
