With our\nabsolute unbroken record of fight against pan-germanist and nazi ideo-\nlogy we could have expected a better deal than to be suppressed just as\nunder the rule of Adolf Hitler and at the same time being insulted pub-\nlicly in a manner, which is unfair, libelous and patently untrue.\nHaving lived several years in the United States, having seen\nyour democracy work, I can not believe that these actions of the Inter-\nallied Council are consistent with the policy of the United States or\ncould even remotely correspond to your will. American democracy means\nrespect for individual freedom, for the opinion as expressed by the\npeople. It means the right to disagree and the right of free speach for\neveryone. What goes on now in Austria is dictatorship in the form\ntaught by the Germans and as inspired by the Communists. It is certain-\nly not democracy.\nWhen I last had the honour to see the late President Roose-\nvelt he repeated to me again his conviction that freedom was indivisible.\nIt can not be destroyed in one country without being endangered in\nthe others. In my country freedom is being oppressed and thus I feel it\nto be my duty to ask you, dear Mr. President, in your quality as\nleader of all those who really believe in democracy, to use your great\ninfluence in order to defend this threatened freedom.
