WASHINGTON

MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject:
Visit of Field Marshal Earl Alexander,
British Minister of Defense, and
Mr. Selwyn Lloyd, Minister of State
in the British Foreign Office
Lord Alexander met with Mr. Lovett and General
Bradley at the Pentagon yesterday, and at the same
time I met with Mr. Selwyn Lloyd and other officials
at the Department of State.
Lord Alexander and Mr. Lloyd each indicated
satisfaction with the way things are being handled in
Korea. During our discussion the point was made that
conditions in Korea are much better than they have
been represented in the British Press.
In the meeting with Mr. Lloyd, we touched on
most of the current problems connected with Korea. We
found that there were no sharp differences between our
ideas and those of the British on the internal situa-
tion in Korea and President Synghman Rhee. Mr. Lloyd
introduced, and we discussed without commitment, his
view that it would be desirable to have an American
political adviser on Korean affairs on General Clark's
staff.
The appointment of a British officer as Deputy
to General Clark's Chief of Staff was proposed by the
British and discussed without commitment.
