fluential Liberal 'Toronto Star'. The Con-
servative 'Globe and Mail' of that city refers
to the complexities of the international prob-
lems to be solved: 'Such complexities are to
be examined not in criticism of the policy to
which the United States is committed but in
recognition of the difficulties which pursuit
of that policy entails. At least five of
the President's fundamental points are pro-
vocative of continued division, for there is
not between Moscow and Washington (or London
or Paris) a mutual understanding of what is
democracy' The 'Ottawa Journal' states
that while 'cynics may look upon many of these
points as nothing more than pious hopes or
glittering generalities, the truth will re-
main that this is the voice and conscience of
the world's mightiest power, with that voice
and conscience on the side of the right'.
"Consul General summarizes 'Winnipeg Free
Press' comment as follows: 'Time is over when
generalities will suffice and American policy
needs reexamination in the light of the
President's speech more especially the in-
consistency between the multilateral ap-
proach sought in the Eastern European situa-
tion and unilateral one adopted by the United
States in the Far East'.

press has evidently suffered somewhat from the
time-lag between Saturday and Monday in the
prominence given the address. The news stories
are, moreover, in almost all cases accompanied
