SECURITY :
-4- 518, JOINT WEEKA NO. 17, Appil 28, 1950, from ottawa.
Protests ageinst cortain imports from other countries
have also begun to assume significance. The government
has takon a definite and firm position that importa from
Britain, for instance, should be encouraged but the
suspension of dumping dutios on automobiles, shich ham
been of particular advantage to British manufacturers,
has been a subject of mounting eriticiem from the trade.
Butter support price reduced. The Government announeed
on April 26 that for the year beginning May 1 the price
of butter will be supported by the purchase of firet
grade creanery butter at 53 cents, basia delivery St.
John, Halifax, sontreal and Toronto. The support price
has been 58 cents since May, 1948. The Government's
vholesale selling price will also be 53 cents per pound
delivery in Ontario and Quebed. This amounts to a
subsidy to the extent of the handling, interest and
storage costs of from 3 to 5 centa per pound depending
on length of storage. The Government now holds 19.4
million pounds and has been unable to sell it abroad
even at 50 cents per pound. The lower support price is
expected to provent a further surplus by causing in-
creased consumption and perhaps some decrease in pro-
duction. Domestic butter consumption in Canada has
dropped during the past year from 28 pounds per eapita
to 23 pounds as a result of legalizing margarine.
Government requisitions cheese. The Government has
announced that, beginning May 1, the cheddar cheese pro-
duction in Ontario and Quebec will be requisitioned in
order to safeguard filling the British 1950 cheese con
tract, which calls for delivery of up to 85 million
pounds. The Government is anxious to fill the contract
this year in order to protect the future merket for
cheese in Britain. This practice of requisitioning
cheese has been used in the past, but not in the last
year or so. Stocks on hand now are 35 million
