- 3 - The President said that when he came to the Senate in 1935 the seaway came up and he voted for it [in committee, perhaps: I do not believe there was a floor vote on the St. Lawrence in 19357. "Since I've been President I've been doing everything possible to get Congress to take a broad view of the matter. 11 The railroads and eastern ports in our country have consistently opposed it. The President said he was going to continue to try to get the Congress to act, "but if there's no other way I'll go along with you". We had opposition too." Railway interests were concerned, and the people of Quebec were afraid the seaway might re- duce Quebec to a picturesque place to look at as the ships go by. Now, however, all parts of Canada are generally for it. "We think Parliament would authorize us to go ahead if the joint scheme can't be done now. " The President said he hoped this meeting today would have a salutary effect on the Congress. He hoped the seaway would go ahead simultaneously with the power.
