Dear Mr. Ambassador
I certainly appreciated most highly your letter of the
ninth.
I think you did perfectly right in accepting the decoration
and I also think that you deserve it. When the law is com-
plied with I want you to have the decoration. It must have
been a matter of great satisfaction to you to have this
ceremony take place. I know that it makes me feel we
are well represented in Chile.
As you know, I've been trying to build up good-will in
Brazil, Chile, Mexico and all the other South American
Republics. I think our relations with Argentine have
improved to some extent. We have always had cordial
relations with Paraguay and most of the Central American
Republics. Our relations with Cuba are now on a satis -
factory basis and I believe we are making progress all
along the line - thanks to first-class representatives in
those countries, and I hope we can continue to improve
our friendship with them.
It was a pleasure to hear from you.
Sincerely yours,
