Woodward, Chier of Protocol COPIES TO: ARA ARCHIVES ONATIONAL B NWC SERVICE" COVERAGE epo -1493 The Chilean Ambassador ealled upon the President today, upon appointment, to thank his on behalf of hie President, H. E. Gabriel Gonzalez Videla, for the hospitality extended to the Chilean President and Presidential Party during their recent visit to the United States. In addition the Ambassador mentioned the great interest of Chile in the legislation now pending in the Congress af- fecting the importation of copper. The President replied that he too was greatly interested in thin matter and that he hoped the Congress would not wisely upon it. He said that the Senators from Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico vould probably be opposed to the legislation, but that there might be enough votes in the Senate to pass the bill. The Ambassador left with the President two notes: one on synthetic nitrate plants and one on the purchase of a tanker by the Chilean Government. The President said that he was familiar with both subjects, that he did not know what could be done about the nitrate plants but that he felt the tanker matter could be settled satisfactorily. The Ambassador then eaid that his Prosident had in- structed hin to explain to President Truman that Chile vas taking such measures as it could to combat inflation, but that ARCHIVES PATIONAL AND A RECORDA : BERVICE"
