Personal and Confidential
Dear Mr. President;
Thanks very much for your good letter of May fourteenth.
I have always been sure that Chile and the United States
are the best of friends and I knew very well your feeling
toward the President of the United States.
My staff has informed me that a settlement has been made
in the copper matter which is satisfactory to both parties.
I am sincerely sorry that I conveyed the impression in my
conversation with your Ambassador that there might be a
serious misunderstanding between us. I knew very well
that that could not happen.
Mrs. Truman told me that she had a most pleasant visit
with the First Lady of Chile and that the First Lady
assured her that our friendship is unbreakable.
I hope everything will work out to your entire satisfaction
and that Chile and the United States will always be friends.
Sincerely yours,
TASHIN
