LATEST OPINION TRENDS IN THE U.S.A.
I. The U.S. and Postwar Territorial Acquisition
Conclusion:
Public sentiment favoring U.S. acquisition
of bases has risen considerably.
Polling Results:
Within the last three years a marked increase
(about 20%) has occurred among those believing
that the U.S. should "get new military bases",
according to an unpublished Denver survey just
received. Today, 53% of a national cross-section
select this position from among the four alterna-
tives listed below.
The majority support now offered to this
proposition by those with opinions on the subject
is in striking contrast to the 34% taking this
position in 1942. Correspondingly, satisfaction
with the extent of U.S. possessions declined from
42% to 28%.
