May 5. 1945 FOR THE PRESIDENT Subjects ELMO ROPIR'S LATRST PUBLIC OPINION SUNTYY You will be interested, if you hove not alreedy soen it, in e. current Elmo Roper public opinion survey which reflected the following opinions on the question of our perticipation in an International Organization: Queation 1. *hich one of these alternatives comea olosest to expressing what you would like to have the United States do efter the wer?" 72 percent may: en active pert in an International Organization." 10 percent say: "Inter into no and have na little as possible to do with other countries.* 5 per- cent say: "Depend only on separate alliences with certnin countries." 13 percent have no opinion. Roper stresses thet the Amerionn people desire a stert on world organisation and do not demnd perfection the structure at the outset. Question 2. (Aaked of the 72 percent above who vant United States participation) On this question Roper found: 53 percent profer: "To get an Internetional Organization sterted right avay, even though it mey not suit some Amerienna in the beginning." 14 percent (only 14 percent) any: and try to get one almost overyone will like before sterting, even if this takes severn] yeers." 5 percent have no opinion.
