Since Bierut's special train would otherwise be
returning to Warsaw empty, he suggested to Herriman that
US Noval Lieutenant Tonesk and Red Cross representative
Cestelberry use it to proceed to Waranw with the 25 tons
of Red Cross supplies now in Moscow destined for Poland.
The journey will take about 48 hours and Tonesk will take
a Navy code with him through which he oan communicate with
Moscow and Washington. They are taking enough personal
polies to last them until Ambassador Lane arrives.
Yuroslavs Stir un Strikes in Trieste. A Yugoslav-
inspired strike at Trieste appears to be a protest at the
disbendment of the Yugoslav-organized auxiliary police
force there and to discredit the present system of food
distribution by limiting the food supply. Actually food
distribution was not affected and the attempts to picket
the bakery and to prevent circulation of the Allied news-
paper were unsuccessful. Weter end electricity are not
involved but the strike involves docks, street cars and some
ships, buildings and shops. A demonstration in Pola
resulted in chemical and dock workers striking but there
were no incidents and the Allied newspaper was issued
regardless.
AFHQ is considering the admittance of private news
agencies to the whole of Italy except Venezia Giulia
effective July 15.
French Lenving NV Italy. French troops continue their
orderly withdrawal from NW Italy and the Aosta area is now
completely clear of them. The French curfew has been lifted
at Susa but civilians may not circulate there without a
special pass and the French order preventing Italian cara-
biniere from appearing on the streets armed or in uniform
is still in effect.
