Elimination of Censorship in Iran Recommended.
Immediate steps to eliminate Anglo-Soviet political
censorship in Iran, which would prevent the Soviet
Tass agency from monopelizing the world press with
biased reports on Iran, is recommended by Ambassador
Murray. American news agencies in the country are
greatly handicapped by the existing censorship, which
may prove a great obstacle in carrying out American
policy in that area, Murray believes. The British
Ambassador is recommending to his government denun-
ciation of the Anglo-Soviet-Iranian censorship arrange-
ment of 1942 and is suggesting that the question be
discussed at the Big Three meeting. Should denuncia-
tion of the agreement be followed by continued Soviet
censorship, based on treaty rights to control Iranian
communications, the United States should strongly
object, Murray believes. He would then recommend use
of Embassy facilities for transmission of American
news despatches.
British Optimistic Over Latest French Offer to
Levant States. The latest French offer to Syria and
Lebanon may, if it proves to be official, represent
a definite first step toward a settlement of the
Franco-Levant States' dispute, the British believe.
French Delegate Ostrorog presented the proposals
unofficially on his return to Beirut from Paris.
His superior General Beynet, has asked Paris for
confirmation.
