MEMORANDUM FOR: Secretary of Defense
Secretary of the Navy
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
Fleet Admiral Nimitz called me while I was absent from my office
on 31 July and left a message in substance as follows:
"He has talked with the Executive Assistant to
Secretary General Lie, who has informed him that his
duties will be Consultant for Public Relations to the
Secretary General for the American People with special
reference to the Korean matter. He states that his duties
will involve problems in the U.N. of unified command in
Korea, and requests your views and those of the JCS
relative to the U.N. command problem so that he can reflect
same in his advisory capacity to the Secretary General.
"He further requests that you notify Secretary Johnson,
Secretary Matthews and Vice Admiral Roper of his functions
at the U.N."
/s/ Forrest Sherman
Chief of Naval Operations
