MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
Subject: Desire of King of Egypt to
Visit the United States.
Our Minister in Cairo reports that an intimate of
King Farouk of Egypt has recently informed him that the
King would be receptive to an invitation to visit the
United States. When President Roosevelt was in Egypt
early this year he told the King that he would like to
have him visit this country and the King was evidently
greatly pleased by this suggestion.
Our Minister feels that such a visit would be ad-
vantageous, and we agree. The young King, who is now
twenty-five years of age, has a keen grasp of political
matters and has shown a desire to play an important role
in the affairs not only of his country but of the entire
Near East. He is quick to learn and still impressionable

opportunity to observe our institutions and culture at
first hand. Such an expenience might aid him in dealing
with the acute social problems which Egypt must face in
the near future. Since Farouk is becoming one of the
most influential figures in the Near East, a visit by
him to this country would also have a highly beneficial
effect upon our relations with the entire area.
If you concur, we suggest an appropriate time for
the visit would be late October or early November, after
the visit of the President of Chile, which has just been
announced. The King, like the Regent of Iraq, whose
