O. 11652, Sec. 3(E) and S(D) or (B)\nDECLASSIFIED\nNITHL OSD NARS Danib-27-75\nletter, April 12, 1974\nBy\nThe Secretary of the Army announced today that as a\nresult of conferences held with the Secretary of State,\nand participated in by General Lucius D. Clay, it has been\nagreed that the Department of State will take over the\nresponsibility now exercised by the Military Government\nin Germany on or about July 1 of this year, and that the\nofficial respresentative of this government in Germany\nwill be designated in time to assume of fice at that date.\nThis decision is the culmination of suggestims put forward\nanew by the War Department last summer.\nThe Department of State desires to use the existing\nMilitary Government organization and to retain the staff\nin tact. This personel is now in large part civilian\nand will be almost entirely civilian by July 1.\nThe\nmilitary duties of occupation will, of course, still be\npe rformed by the Army.\nSECRET"
