CONFIDENTIAL - 2 - Ten minutes later he called back and said, "Bill, I think I acted a little hastily in talking to you. I was advised three days before publication in Pearson's column." I said, "who advised you?" He replied, "Pearson." I said, "Did he do it by telephone or did he come over in person?" He said, "He came to see me on other matters and while here showed me the cable." I said, "Then what happened? What did you do about it?" "We wrote a letter to McCloy. The letter speaks for itself." It should be noted that he did not mention Pearson in a letter to McCloy. I asked, "Did you tell Security Control this, or did you tell this office?" "No. No reason why I should have. We wrote the letter to the War Department. I said, "Did Pearson tell you where he got it?" He said, "No, you'll have to ask him." N ARCHIVES FECORDS SERVICE AND William J.
