My dear Mr. President:
Because of the recent developments
in the investigation of the administration of the tax laws,
I have been so harrassed by so many telephone calls that
my family and my children have had no rest. It has been a
source of great embarrassment to me -- an embarrassment so
undeserved that I can hardly express it in this communication
to you. My family has been begging me to resign. It has
been the topic of conversation each night at my home. So
many unfounded and false rumors have appeared and the media
of public information seem unwilling to convey the true facts
to the public. I have come to the conclusion that the only
way that I can get the true facts concerning these matters
to public understanding is to be free from the limitations
of office.
For the sake of the happiness of my
family and my children, I ask you, please, to accept my
resignation so that I may pursue this further unhampered by
official responsibility.
I assure you, Mr. President, that when
my side of the story has been fully presented, my official
record will be one which you and I will have no cause to
regret.
It has been a privilege to me to serve
under your administration and I hope you will continue to
count me among your loyal and adoring friends.
Respectfully and sincerely yours,
The President
Assistant Attorney General
