mr. President

Facts on mail - as of Dec. 1953

There have been 1,727 letters since the week of October 3, when I began
counting, expressing praise of the President, expressing appreciation of
his service, complimenting his whistle stop campaign, extolling his
program, praising him personally for his courage -- also Mrs. Truman for
her charm and Margaret for loveliness, hundreds of them regretting that
he did not seek re-election, other hundreds telling what a wonderful
nominee Mr. Stevenson was.
Of late the praise of service and program is principal subject, with
commendation of the way he has been making the transition between adminis-
trations easy often mentioned.
We estimate that 75% of correspondents say they are writing their first
letter to a President or VIP - our files indicate that the percentage is
that high or higher.
Most mail addressed Dear Mr. President, sometimes with addition of something
like, From a Citizen to the First Citizen. One said "My very good and dear
President".
