66 and 126 hourly shift differentials. The settlement was not on
the list of dispute cases certified to WSB and it is presently assumed
to be in the hands of WSB's 8th Region at Dallas, Texas.
The third settlement involves Standard Oil Company of Cali- -
fornia's producing, marketing and pipe line operations in the State
of California and affects about 5,000 employees. Terms are reported
to include a 156 basic hourly increase, plus 3.56 in fringe increases,
plus 60, 7.50, and 126 shift differentials.
It appears that an expeditious handling of any or all of
the wage settlements properly before the National Wage Stabilization
Board might well encourage an early conclusion of the strikes. It
is our understanding that whatever action the Board takes with respect
to any of the cases originally certified to it would fairly well determine
the maximum that the Board will allow in other dispute cases in the
industry, and might encourage companies and unions to seek the same
type of settlement in order to conclude their differences.
Late this afternoon the Wage Stabilization Board is reported
to have sent a telegram to all companies and unions requesting (1) that
the unions go back to work and (2) that all parties come to Washington
for conference on May 13. The communication referred to settlements
already made and others pending and implied that WSB would act on
these promptly. Results remain to be seen. Our best information is
that the CIO Oil Workers officers will not request their members to
go back to work in the interim.
