3) The ghostly literary talent must have become confused in this instance,
for the same article appears in the READER'S DIGEST, November 1950, under
the name, this time, of Joseph A. Fisher, national president, Utility
Workers Union (CIO) of America.
It would appear that the electric utilities have more success in merging
the AFL and CIO than do the individual members of these bodies:
4) Copies of this material are distributed by Purcell Smith's National Asso-
ciation of Electric Companies, an organization not previously assumed to
be devoted to a labor point of view.
1. The Natural Resources Department of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States
serves as a sounding board for utility propaganda, producing reports which are
distributed by the Chamber as well as by the National Association of Electric
Companies.
1) "Can Federal and Private Power Live Together?", the round table production
of the 38th annual meeting, May 2, 1950, features the same general line which
has characterized the utility advertising campaign:
"home-managed electric companies"
"their equity ownership in the hands of a typical cross-section of more
than three million American citizens"
"managed by men who have come up through the ranks"
"there is no 'trust in the electric utility industry"
"What does the industry have to fear? It is the plague of socialism. Our
American economic system is in deadly peril.'
"But we are on that road and are being led down it (to socialism) by social
scientists, some government officials and economic planners, most of whom
would rise up in horror if they were described as Socialists."
"The electric companies are taking care of the full power needs of their
areas.'
"The utilities, almost without exception, approved of the original objective
of REA. They, too, have built rural lines to serve farmers at such a
rapid rate that today the job of making electricity available to all
farms is practically done."
