Just before leaving Vienna Robert Vogeler requested me to
IE
forward the following message to President Truman on his
DCR
behalf:
"I was not aware until reaching Vienna of the great crisis
which was forced upon the United States and which occured
during my imprisonment. It is amazing to me that with all
your difficulties and troubles time was found to complete
so successfully negotiations for my liberation. This is
an example of the great solicitude our country has for every
one of its humblest citizens. Pending my return to the
United States I should appreciate your thanking the American
people in my name for their confidence and continuing
interest in my welfare."
