From the citizens of these comminities,I heard universalm paraise for the disciplin-
ed and orderly lives these young men live under the tutelage of the men put over
them.
" I do not believe that any one who has seen this saving of humen material, which will
constitute the core of society in the next generation, will regret a single dollar
spent in this great regenerativo effort. As a matter of fact, the work done by the
corps both materially and in permanent value, would have cost a great deal more un-
der ordinary conditions than was spent on the corps. In soil erosion and forest work
alone, this nation is receiving millions of dollars in values through vorce lebor of
the corps.
" The second crisis in the average life is the working period. Through the New Deal,
more than 3 million men and women have been restored to work and with the visible
signs of economic improvement this number will be added to within a few months.
" One piece of legislation which will face the next Congress will be the matter
of employment insurance, advocated by President Roosevelt. It will be the @ffort of
the Democratic party to put every worker possible in employment and keep him there
or compensate him for enforced idleness.
"
The United State has very properly been intent upon building up the nation's
wealth. But in doing so,it allowed one of the most vital, the most important and
the most valuable element--human beings--to drift aimlessly and without thought
of their futures. This situation must be and will be corrected.
The third crisis is when men and women have passed the flush of life and have
found thei r worl-life over or nearly so. They no longer can get jobs or they are
forced to chink in at itinerant tasks. These good citizens should have old a ge
pensions. They should not be stigmatized in law and public opinion as paupers and
deprived of their votes becuase they are public charges.
They should not be confined in public institutions. They should be allowed to
live as other people live. to keep their few household goods and live in decency
and self-respect.
