TRENTON, MO. Oct. 17;--The nation itself was insolvent when taken over by
the present Democratic national administration, it was charged here tomay M
by Judge Harry S. Truman,Democratic nominee for United States Senator. Tru
man is making his canvass this week in counties north of the Missouri riv-
er,ending with a day in St. Joseph at the close of the week.
Truman said that in the Wall Street crash, there was lost in actual and
*illusionary " wealth 120 billion dollars. This sum approximated the accum
ulated earnings of the nation over thirty years,he said. The figures showe
what a stern task it was that confronted President Roosevelt on his taking
office, he declared.
The situation, he said, did not bear out Republican assertions that the Re
publican party was the constructive party in the United States. They show
on the contrasy,he asserted, lamentable lack of proper direction of the
nation's economic and financial affairs. Graft, fraud and pillage, he charged
had left the financial system of the country a mere shell. Wall Street val"
ues,he asserted, had been based on future earnings of various corporations
current
and not on values.
Because of this false value system, Truman declared the entire economic
system of the country was thrown out of gear. Wages were held low to afford
dividends, while corporations earning large profits overbuilt their plants
to increase production on a market that was being undermined by uneconom-
the
ic returns to industry's consumers, farmers and workers.
The attitude of leading Republicans toward our plight accentuates it,
Truman declared. Since the first signs of returning prosperity, every Re-
has
publican of old Guard instincts, hove mustered up courage enough to start
throwing rocks. The chief hurler is my opponent, Senator Roscoe C. Patter-
son. He would complete the ruin his votes aided in starting.
