DEMOCRATIC CITY CAMPAIGN headQuarters. Twelfth and Olive Streets. "MATIONAL Release Thursday, November 1, 1934. (Post-Dispatch) ARCHIVES AND RECORDS SERVICE" EXCLUSIVE ON JUDGE HARRY S. TRUMAN SPEECH There is much confusion in the public mind as to how the remedial measures advocated by the President affected local communities. Figures have been given out relating to the entire country or to states, but it is hard to apply these in the public mind wi th what has been accomplished in each community I am informed that in the City of St. Louis and nearby points more than 10,000 men employed in the building trades were given work under the CWA and PWA projects and that 5000 of these are still at their jobs. This employment will continue for months with the larger number of these men at their tasks. Needless to say, the work upon which they are engaged and on which half of them are S till working is of a permanent nature; pro jects which will be in use years after this depression is forgotten. But the projects have furnished employment to the heads of families who needed it and the returns have been spent with local merchants and have aided the community. They have spent $25,000,000 in St. Louis. In addition to this work, there have been other projects which have am struck furnished employment to other thousands of men and women. I with this thought, in considering this work, and that is the courage of the President in great public works in a time of utmost discouragement. planning His position is in direct contrast with the course of former President Hoover, who stood supine under the pressure of three years of depression and without a plan by which thousands at the bottom of the economic pile might be aided. It is wi th these thoughts in mind that I ask every thinking citizen to vote the straight Democratic ticket; to vote for the candidates of a party which has thought for every class of our people, regardless of current conditions. I do not believe that those who are nominally Republicans will vote their real convictions in easting their ballots for a political philosophy bottomed on drift. -1-
