to AND WHAT IS COMMUNISM? : SERVICE" RECORDS Communism is the basic political philosophy of Soviet Russia. Russian Communism is sometimes referred to as Leninism since it follows Lenin's interpretation of Marxism; the present description of Communism is in strict agreement with Lenin's interpretation. As already indicated, Communism is based upon the Dialectical Materialism of Marx and upon the application of the philosophy of Dialectical Materialism to a number of important human institutions. Among the applications of Dialectical Materialism which are of immedi- ate importance in considering the question of Soviet-American relation- ships, are those in the fields of history, the State, religion, morality, revolution, and society. A brief analysis of the significance of the philosophy of Communism in each of these fields is herewith* presented. (a) Its Philosophy of History. Marxism contends that the regularity, the orderly sequence, and the predictability of historical events can be explained only by a basic unifying factor and that the existence of free will (freedom of choice) is not consistent with this regularity. Religion, educa- tion, science, art, and many other social institutions are recognized as forces motivating men, but such forces must in turn be explained in terms of some basic unifying fundamental factor. This basic driving force of history is stated by Marxism to be derived from the definite material limitations and conditions serv- ing human life; the methods by which man produces his necessities of -8-
