Pursuant to instructions he received via Army
channels Ambassador Harriman informed Molotov on
August 2 that he had bEEn directed by the President
to Extend to Stalin an invitation for
Marshal Zhukov to visit the US in the near future.
I have now received a letter from Vyshinski
dated SEptember 17 in which he states that Stalin
has instructEd him to request m E to inform the
President that Marshal Zhukov accepts his kind
invitation and that Marshal Zhukov on his part has
asked that the President be informed that the most
convenient time for him to visit the US would be thE
beginning of October.
I assume the DEPT will wish to transmit this
information to the White House and am wiring Ambassador
Harriman that the messate is being convey dd in that manner.
