-9- farther had we not taken effective countermeasures. He con- tinued: "The Communists are highly skilled at the techniques of keeping themselves in power, and they are willing in many cases -- and perhaps prefer -- to use measures other than naked force to gain acquiescence from the people. Terror enters in, of course. Everybody knows of someone who has mystericusly disappeared from the scene, but the terror lies in the background, so to speak, and you don't see it happening all around you." After the Hungarian people had made it clear in the first postwar elections in November 1935 they had little use for the Communists, Mr. Chapin stated, the Communists resolved to force their will upon the people. In order to do this, they had to break the power of the political opposition and weaken the hold of the churches upon the people. By mid-1948 Cardinal Mindszenty "was left as the sole fighting symbol of resistance to Communism", and he then "had to be eliminated", Mr. Chapin asserted, adding: "We know that the greatest obstacle to peace and security lies in the relentless drive of Communist totali- tarianism for world domination and we are determined to stop that drive." 18 VATIONAL V. NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST Greek People United to Resist Communism. - The Greek people are united today as they have never been before in resisting the Communist peril to their national independence and integrity and to their cherished personal freedom, Assistant Secretary George C. McGhee stated in a Washington address on June 27. He stated that the "Americans who are in Greece today constitute no threat to Greece, to any legitimate foreign interest in Greece or to the security of any foreign nation. They are there in response to a request by the Greek Government and people to help them meet a very real danger to the security of the Greek nation." 19 Communist Threats to Iran. - Assistant Secretary George V. Allen declared in an address of June 10 at Grinnell College, Iowa, that threats were made on two occasions "by high Soviet authority" of personal danger to the Iranian Prime Minister, in a Soviet effort to force an oil concession from Iran. Pointing up "one important aspect of the ideological struggle which we Americans must keep constantly in mind" in studying the area of the Middle East, Mr. Allen declared: 18 Bulletin, June 26, p. 820. 19 Press release 491 of June 27.
