-8- Indonesia: Ambassador Austin Criticizes Soviet Attack on Settlement. -- The Soviet attack on the settlement of the Indonesian question, Ambassador Austin said in a plenary ses- sion of the UN General Assembly on December 7, was not "unex- pected. He charged that the Soviet Union and its satellites had "consistently attacked constructive efforts of the United Nations to solve its problems. If The continuation of disputes, he continued, was essential for the promotion of the "Comin- form's expansionist ambitions. " He warned that if the legiti- mate leaders of nationalist independence movements accept the support of international Communism they merely "trade one colo- nialism for another. '15 Indonesia: Deputy Representative Gross Decries Soviet Opposition to the Settlement. -- Speaking before the Security Council on December 12, US Delegate Ernest A. Gross referred to the Soviet charges that the agreements reached in Novem- ber at the Round Table Conference held at The Hague left In- donesia under imperialist control. He said that these char- ges were simply an effort to hide the facts. He declared that the accord reached at The Hague provided that the United Indonesian Republic would be a free and independent state, with the people of Indonesia free to choose their own form of government and their leaders. "The Soviet Union", continued Mr. Gross, "has not been willing to support any of the reso- lutions of the Assembly or of the Security Council looking towards the development of Indonesia as a free and indepen- dent people.
