Council\naction deferred pending further study of this report by the Depart-\nment of State. Scheduled for discussion at 12th Meeting of NSC at\nwhich time it was again deferred pending the receipt of a substi- -\ntute report which the Department of State is preparing.\nTHE INTERNAL SECURITY OF THE UNITED STATES\n(NSC 17/2)\nAt its 17th Meeting, August 5, the NSC approved the Conclusions of\nNSC 17/1 and directed the Executive Secretary to submit appropriate\nrecommendations. The report of the Executive Secretary, NSC 17/2,\nis scheduled as Item 1 on the agenda of the 18th NSC Meeting,\nAugust 19.\nAPPRAISAL OF THE DEGREE AND CHARACTER OF MILITARY PREPAREDNESS\nREQUIRED BY THE WORLD SITUATION\n(NSC 20)\nMemorandum by the Secretary of Defense suggesting that the Depart\nment of State draft an initial statement of the risks, objectives\nand measures related to the national security for consideration by\nthe Council as a matter of highest priority. At its 17th Meeting,\nAugust 5, the Council agreed that the Department of State will\nprepare a report on the risks and objectives for Council considera-\ntion. On the basis of the completed report, the NSC directed the\nStaff to recommend specific measures to achieve the national securi-\nty objectives.
