Secretary of State
NO:
40, January 19
Following from President Rhee for President Truman.
"January 19, 1949
To His Excellency Harry S. Truman, The President of the
United States.
We join with all the democratic nations in rejoicing
and congratulating Your Excellency on your inauguration
as President of the United States, for it means an
assurance of the continuation of your world policy for
at least another four years. We are determined to fight
for democracy regardless of others because, to accept
Communism means to accept enslavement which we will not
without resistance. If America, the mother of all
democracies, only stands 81rm and helps all the nations
struggling for freedom, all the liberty loving peoples
will do their part in checking the spread of Communism
which threatens the rights of man and the existence of
independent nations on the face of the earth. To carry
out your world policy is Korea's earnest hope. Do we
offer Your Excellency our heartrelt felicitation on this
joyous occasion."
