SECRET MILITARY OPERATIONS FROM 11 MARCH 1951 TO 11 APRIL 1951, INCLUSIVE 35. During the two weeks period ending 15 March 1951, CINCFE continued to keep the enemy off balance by limited objective operations. During this period, United Nations pressure forced the enemy northward 6-8 miles on the central front of Korea. The enemy undertook vigorous delaying actions but suffered heavy casualties. Meanwhile, the enemy continued to move heavy forces into North Korea. Extensive vehicular movements in hostile rear areas were noted. Guerrilla forces operating in United Nations rear areas were relatively inactive. On 15 March 1951, the front lines ran generally along the Han River from the west coast to 12 miles east of Seoul, thence generally eastward to Yangdogwan, thence east-southeast to Man-ni, east-northeast to Hajinby and thence northeast to Chimunjin. United Nations naval forces continued to deny to the enemy RECORDS S SERVICE COVER to the use of Korean coastal waters while protecting the un- restricted movement of United Nations shipping to and from Korea. Carrier-based aircraft and naval gunfire destroyed moving transport, scores of bridges, and rendered unusable many tunnels, in hostile rear areas. 37. Enemy jet fighters in flights of 15-25 during the two weeks! period ending 15 March ineffectively challenged United Nations air supremacy. The United States Air Force and Naval Air applied relentless pressure against the enemy and achieved a new figure of some 1,250 sorties on one day. There was close integration of air and ground efforts. 38. On 15 March 1951, the Joint Chiefs of Staff held an informal conference with representatives of the Department of State and among other things, discussed the Korean situation. It appeared to be generally agreed that at some future meeting an agreement should be reached on the objectives in Korea. It was suggested that the Secretary of State talk to the Secretary of Defense SECRET - 99 -
