Private and press opinion Switzerland, which was rather
DCR
divided and confused for first few days after Korean
fighting started, now clearly welcomes US sea and air
intervention as only possible policy under circumstances and
one much more likely to save world peace than lose it
(LEGTELS 826, 832, 843, DEPCIRTEL June 26, 3 a.mo).
Private comment by representative Swiss yesterday to
members my staff expressed approval in enthusiastic terms.
Editorialists who two or three days ago were gloomily
predicting speedy Communist victory with resultant world-wide
collapse of confidence in UNO and in US, now jubilantly
announce that Moscow is confronted by overwhelming strength
non-Communist world and will almost certainly back down.
Swiss financial circles are also reported unperturbed
Communist press, which is only exception to general approval
US line of action, has been unusually restrained, limiting
comment to short exegesis on Tass and North Korean despatches
alleging South Korean aggression, illegality UN action, et
cetera, but also publishing fairly complete accounts from
Reuters and other Western news agencies. Last night's
issue VOIX OUVRIERE, chief Communist daily, gives distinct
impression that they would prefer to forget whole matter.
Whole first page and much of second devoted to elaborate
article on worker's gymnastic competition Lausanne.
