INCOMING TELEGRAM Department of State TELEGRAPH BRANCH 19-B Form A Action Control: 13229 FE Rec'd: June 29, 1950 FROM: Brussels 7:42 p.m. o Info S. TO: Secretary of State G P NO: 1025, June 29, 7 p . m . SAM EUR UNA General reaction in Belgium to resolute steps taken by US OLI pursuant to SC resolution is one of relief and wholehearted CIA support. Prior to President's statement a fairly typical AAN comment in Belgium was that voiced by Minister Public Works IE Coppe who, on June 27, just before President's statement PA was made public, said in friendly, but emphatic fashion DCR that US had lost great deal of face because of Korean incident and that Europeans would ask themselves what countries US intended to defend and then abandon and what countries US would defend and stay with. This pessimistic attitude has changed overnight with news of resolute US action in Far East. From every side and in every class Belgian society we received direct confirmation of immense uplift which US action has given people here. Very typical, and reproduced in translation for possible use VOA is following letter addressed to me by G. Defawe*, Vice President for Belgium of International Association for Identification. "In my capacity, as State Vice President for Belgium of International Association for Identification, I beg you to please transmit to President Truman my gratitude and that of Belgian members of the IAI on occasion of firm decision which he has taken with regard to attack against peace which has developed in Korea. Belgian members of IAI do not doubt that position taken will make it possible to localize and rapidly to repel this aggression, at the same time reenforcing confidence which free, though weak TROMAN people have in the great American Republic. 11 Van Zelland's excellent statement to Parliament this ARCHIVES "NATIONAL SERVICE^ RECORDS AND afternoon reported separately. is MURPHY DECLASSIFIED JB:LQB O. 11652, Sec. 3(E) and SYD) or 5 w-1-7t Dept. of State letter, Note: Relayed to VOANY 3 a.m. 6-30-50 EH. pa STUCT He , MAR3.D. 12.5.71 I REPRODUCTION OF THIS MESSAGE IS PROHIBITED
