NLT (PSF-KOREA) 19 DEPARTMENT OF STATE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY WASHINGTON June 30, 1950 top SUMMARY OF TELEGRAMS KOREA Wholehearted approval of our Korean action continues to be expressed by foreign governments to our repre - sentatives around the world. Enthusiastic private statements by officials of other governments have been echoed in the local press and radio and have been borne out by public announcements of support throughout virtu- ally the entire non-Communist world. Legation Bern reports that private and public opinion in Switzerland clearly welcomes US sea and air action as much more likely to save world peace than to lose it, and editorial comment is characterized as "jubilant. " The Swiss general staff was "delighted" to hear of our action and believes there will be no general war as a result of the Korean developments. Embassy Brussels describes the general reaction in Belgium as one of "relief and wholehearted sup- port" from every class of Belgian society. In Paris, a high Foreign Office official repeated a sentiment which our Embassy describes as "universal" in responsible French circles: that the US action was one of "brilliant statesmanship. " The Foreign Office has informally indicated to our Embassy its intention to join us in our embargo of exports to North Korea. In the Near East, the governments of Turkey and Burma have added to many other nations their support of our move, with officials of both countries "much encouraged", and with no feeling in Turkey that this move will lead to full-scale conflict with the USSR. In Latin America, the governments and the radios and newspapers in Costa Rica, Peru, Brazil, Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Venezuela, and Mexico have indicated their whole - hearted support of our action. 5-TRUMAND DECLASSIFIED 'NATIONAL ARCHIVES E.
