EXTRACT FROM WAR DEPARTMENT OPERATIONAL SUMMARY FOR 14 MAY:
Lt. General Clay submitted the following report on the foad
situation in Germany:
a. It is estimated that about 1,022 calories per person per day
will be available from 1 October 1946 to 30 September 1947 from
production.
b. To support a 1,550 calorie ration for normal consumers will reas
quire monthly imports of approximately 65,000 metric tons of flour (77,800
tons of wheat), 13,000 metric tons of pulses ( edible seeds of various
leguminous crops, as peas, beans, lentils, etc), and 6,500 metric tons of
dried skim milk.
C. It must be appreciated that 1,550 calories for the normal consumer
is not considered adequate by public health officials who insist that a
minimum of 2,000 calories for normal consumers is necessary to maintain
health for any protracted period.
