IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 26, 1951. The President hasutoday sent the following letter to the Honorable Ingram M. Stainback, accepting his resignation as Governor of Hawaii: "March 23, 1951 TRUMAN Dear Governor Stainback: ARCHIVES **ATIONAL SERVICE" RECORDS AND Having in mind the considerations' which you emphasize in your letter of February seventh, I have no recourse but to acquiesce in your desire to relinquish your duties as Governor of Hawaii. Accordingly, I hereby accept your resignation, effective at the close of business on April thirtieth, next. It is gratifying to know of your willingness to con- tinue in the public service and that you are agreeable to accepting appointment as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. I shall in the course of the next few days submit your nomination to the Senate. During your tenure as Governor, yours has been the privilege of serving during a significant period of history when the duties of office brought you constantly in contact with grave and important problems. I gladly embrace this opportunity to thank you for your faithful services to the people of Hawaii and the Nation during difficult years. Very sincerely yours, HARRY S. TRUMAN" Following is the text of Governor Stainback's letter to the President: "February 7, 1951 My dear Mr. President: You will recall that I have served as Governor of Hawaii since 1942. Throughout this period the duties of the office have been arduous, taxing both physical and mental resources. I now feel for reasons of health and other personal consider- ations that I must ask you to relieve me of the burdens of the office in the near future. Because of the impending session of the legislature beginning on February 21 and the urgent need of certain measures which I intend to propose, I feel that it would be desirable for me to remain through the legislative session which will terminate by law about May 1. I therefore respectfully request that you accept my resignation effective at that time. It has been a privilege and a great honor to serve as Governor during your administration. Sincerely yours, INGRAM M. STAINBACK"
