- 4 - is concerned. The Personality and Characteristics of the Regent The Regent is about 33 years of age. He is of medium height, slender, and well groomed. Although he has Western manners and dresses like an Englishman or an American, he nevertheless is a patriotic Arab and his mentality is more Arab than Western. He studied for some years in an English boys' school in Alexandria, Egypt, and he speaks English extremely well. NATIONAL ARCHIVES RECORDS He is modest and shy. He is at ease when those SERVICE< around him treat him as an equal without at the same time showing undue familiarity. He is embarrassed when too much attention is centered upon him. Some of the British around the Regent have en- deavored to make him believe, only with partial success, that in Great Britain lies the only hope for the Hashemi te family; that the Americans are in general against monarchies, even those of a limited character, and that the other great powers, if given opportunity, would place puppet governments of their own in Iraq and in other Arab countries. The Regent likes Americans and admires the accomplish- ments of the United States. He has been somewhat timid, however, in demonstrating his liking for the United States for fear that he would offend some of his British advisers who are extremely jealous of growing American prestige
