DEPARTMENT OF STATE
WASHINGTON
May 7, 1945.
Dear Mr. President:
When I spoke to you this morning about the with-
drawal of Mr. Gray from Dublin I did so on the basis of
a telegram from the Minister himself, who suggested it.
Since this morning I have re-examined all the steps
taken by the Irish Government on the deaths of Presi-
dent Roosevelt and Hitler. They are as follows:
President Roosevelt's death -
1. The President of Ireland sent a tele-
gram of sympathy to President Truman.
2. De Valera sent a telegram of condolence
to the Secretary of State on behalf of his Govern-
ment, the Lower House, and the people of Ireland.
3. The Irish Minister at Washington sent
a. message of sympathy to Mrs. Roosevelt.
4. De Valera called in person on Minister
Gray on the morning of April 13.
5. The Lower House adjourned out of respect
and de Valera in moving the adjournment paid a.
warm tribute to President Roosevelt. The Upper
House also passed resolutions of condolence.
