MEMO
Mr. James McDonald, Ambassador to Israel, telephoned
Mr. David K. Niles from Rome on October 11, 1949.
"I had a very pleasant audience W ith the Pope yesterday.
"The Pope asked me if I thought that Israel is prepared
to give
guarantee$ that the Holy places would be
safeguarded, and could they live up to such promises.
The Pope also indicated that he did not think that the
differences between the Israeli and the Church were
irreconcilable and I assured the Pope that they were
not irreconcilable.
We spoke about Spellman and I told him that I had
the impression that he was more realistic than the
younger people about him. The Pope asked me if I
meant Monsignor Griffith.
"The Pope spoke in very high terms of the President.
"I think there is more willingness for compliance
in the highest Church quarters than is indicated by
the younger people around the Cardinal.
"We have been held up by the weather andare due in
Israel on Thursday."
