Return to
Secret Italy
(15 May 1945) Foreign
Memorandum for background.
1.
General Tito has about 48000 troops
in or near our area in Italy.
Field Marshal Alexander has about
1,000,000 troops of various nationalities
in Italy.
2.
We now have about 1,000,000 Army troops
in the war against Japan. War Department
intends to increase this number by
1,200,000 from Europe.
3. There are at the present time 2 Divisions,
30,000 French troops in Italy.
They are supported and fed by General
Eisenhower.
4. Lend-lease for Europe At the present
time, since Germany surrendered, we are
not delivering any lend-lease military
equipment to anybody.
The French are pressing for armament and
equipment for their post-war Army; for
their proposed forces to be used against
Japan; and for their projected armies for
occupation of Germany.
5.
Regarding rumors of military action by
American armies on the continent of Asia
(China) - there are no plans for an in-
vasion of China and the general opinion
of the American Chiefs of Staff is that
no great invasion of China will be
necessary to defeat Japan.
