MEMORANDUM FOR THE SECRETARY
As you probably know, Mrs. Taylor and I donated
our larger Villa (Schifanoia) at Florence to His
Holiness The Pope in 1940. It was arranged that the
Pope would allow full use of it by the American
Dominican Sisters (a teaching Order) whose Mother
House is at Saint Olara Convent, Sinsinawa, Wisconsin.
There are branch schools in many American cities,
including New York, Boston, Chicago, for the education
of young women and children.
The American Order for many years have maintained
a branch school of languages in Switzerland for their
American students.
For a number of years one of the Sisters now
deceased) in the Arts classes had written us of a desire
to establish a branch in Italy for advanced students in
the Arts. We were moved to make a gift, in the way
indicated, of our Villa in Florence, fully furnished and
equipped. In order to achieve perpetuity and oversight
we offered the Villa to His Holiness The Pope who accepted
it. Difficulties with the Mussolini regime caused delays
in the actual entry into possession, but all was cleared
more than a year ago, the Pope installing three Blue Nuns
(a nursing Order) as caretakers until such time as the
Dominicans from this country could take possession.
I have now arranged for two Sisters from America to
visit Florence when Mrs. Taylor and I will be in Rome as
planned in May-June. The attached letter indicates the
Mother Superior's concern about passports, etc. I am
sure you will be of willing assistance in this respect
and will
