7586 Personal and Confidential June 21, 1952 Memorandum for: Dean G. Acheson Secretary of State From: The President I have been thinking seriously about the Vatican situa - tion and I am of the opinion that we should not let up on the policy which we started out to pursue when we appointed Mark Clark Ambassador to the Vatican. An Episcopal Rector here in town, who is among the finest, has been helping BedellSmith on the Psychological Warfare Program and he has written a book on Christianity and Communism, A few weeks ago he preached a sermon over at St. John's Church which I consider one of the best I've ever listeaed to. I am sending you a copy of it. He is expecting to go to Europe on a tour and there will be a Conference on the general subject of "Christian Civilization" at the city of Florence, Italy. It occurs to me that it might be an excellent thing to suggest to this young man when he gets back here that he become Minister - not Ambassador but Minister - to the Vatican, I think he would be delighted to take it.
