SHOULD AMERICA BE REPRESENTED
AT THE VATICAN?
AN EPISCOPALIAN VIEWPOINT
"Come now, and let us reason
together, saith the Lord."
-ISAIAH 1:18
This sermon is being printed through
As I venture upon the uneasy ground of this emotive
the interest and generosity of a layman
and controversial subject, I am reminded of an Irish
and lifelong member of the Episcopal
story which for many years has been a treasured pos-
Church. It is his desire and prayer, as
session.
it is mine, that its distribution will pro-
"Mrs. Moriarity", said a newly introduced acquaint-
mote unity and brotherhood among all
ance, "do you by any chance spring from the Moriaritys
of Dublin?'
Americans and advance the cause of
"Spring from the Moriaritys of Dublin"-here Mrs.
Christ's Kingdom in the whole earth.
Moriarity paused as if to allow time for the enormity
C. W. L.
of the idea to sink in-"I don't spring from anybody; I
spring at 'em."
This spirit is the opposite of the temper with which
I approach the discussion of the vexed and inflammable
question: "Should America have an envoy at the Vati-
can?" I do not desire to attack anyone. I do not desire
to force on anyone my own opinions. I do not want on
Reformation Sunday to pour fuel upon the flames of
existing intolerance. I do not want to make a red-hot
situation any hotter. My prayer is rather that of John
Wesley:
"O Lord, give us light, not heat."
