same DEPARTMENT OF STATE WASHINGTON May 21, 1952 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT iff Subject: Resignation of Ambassador Sayre; Nomination of Ambassador Muccio. Ambassador Francis B. Sayre is calling on you on Thursday, May 22, at 12:15 P.M., in order to pay his respects before resigning his present post as United States Representative in the Trusteeship Council, effective June 1, a difficult post which he has, held for the past five years. Ambassador Sayre is leaving shortly for Japan, as Bishop Henry Knox Sherill's personal representative to the Episcopal Church in Japan. You may wish to express your appreciation for Ambassador Sayre's most able and devoted service in the Trusteeship Council. You will recal] that on May 19 you approved my recommendation that Ambassador John J. Muccio succeed Ambassador Sayre as United States Representative in the Trusteeship Council. Ambassador Sayre has been informed of his successor, but there will be no public announcement of Ambassador Muccio's appointment until he has been formally recommended for this post.
